Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg does not agree with President Donald Trump’s claim that the economy has not faced any problems since he took office.

“The word affordability — I inherited a mess,” Trump told Politico’s Dasha Burns yesterday. “Prices were at an all-time high when I came in; prices are coming down substantially.”

When asked how he would grade the economy, Trump said, “A-plus-plus-plus-plus-plus-plus.” He cited prices going down since he became president as his reasoning for the grade, even though prices have continued to increase since he took office, and the rate at which they increased (inflation) remains above the Federal Reserve Bank’s target.

“This is the economy that Donald Trump called ‘A++++++’ today,” Buttigieg responded on social media, sharing headlines about increasing prices and layoffs. One of the headlines he shared was about a report from the consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas that found that layoff announcements this year are at their highest level since 2020, the last year that Trump was president.
