“Gay hockey show Heated Rivalry has certainly created an unprecedented interest in the sport of ice hockey amongst the gay community. To be sure, watching star characters Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, as well as two other gay characters, get it on off the ice certainly helped,” notes Outsports in a recent article.
Outsports goes on to list 21 teams in the US, Canada and even one from Australia. Topping the story is a photo of Boston’s own Boston Pride Hockey players.
Here’s the more on that score from Outsports:
In 2024, USA Hockey posted an article profiling the Madison Gay Hockey Association in Wisconsin, saying that 15% of the 270-member group were new skaters — about 1 in 7.
The Los Angeles Blades claim to be the oldest gay hockey team in the United States, dating back to 1985. However, we couldn’t find any new information or social-media posts from the organization since 2023 [though you’ll find plenty of current info on Boston Pride Hockey‘s website]. Still, we include them here:
- Albany Pride Hockey Association (N.Y.)
- Boston Pride Hockey
- Chicago Pride Hockey
- Coachella Valley Pride Hockey (Palm Springs, Calif.)
- Los Angeles Blades
- Madison (Wis.) Gay Hockey Association
- NYCGHA: NYC Pride Hockey Alliance
- Pittsburgh LGBTQ+ Hockey
- Seattle Pride Hockey Association
- Twin Cities Hockey
- Washington DC’s Gay Hockey
