CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten outlined Donald Trump’s abysmal polling numbers, particularly with Independents, ahead of Tuesday night’s State of the Union address.

“The bottom line is this: Donald Trump has never been weaker going into a State of the Union address… and weaker by a considerable amount,” Enten declared, explaining that the president’s current net approval rating is -27, compared to -15, -10, and -10 going into the address in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

He also explained that Barack Obama and George W. Bush were doing considerably better going into their addresses at this point in their second terms, with approval ratings of -15 and -11, respectively.

Enten said Trump’s horrific numbers stem from a massive shift in Independents. He said it is “the weakest that Donald Trump has ever been” with that group, expressing shock as he showed that his favorability among Indepedents fropped from -13 in February 2025 to -47 today.

“Look at this drop!” he exclaimed.

“When you‘re 47 points underwater with independents, that‘s the name of the game. You can‘t be above water overall,” he said. “And that‘s why Donald Trump is near record lows overall and the lowest he‘s ever been going into a State of the Union address.”
