Far-right commentator Ann Coulter is getting brutally mocked online for a particularly ignorant statement she made about Donald Trump, who she voted for in 2024.
“That beautiful ending to Trump’s SOTU [State of the Union] address reminds me why we can’t have a second-, third-, or fourth- generation immigrant as president,” she wrote on X. “Love for our country has to be in your genes.”

The idea that having a lineage of predecessors who were born in the U.S. makes a person more noble is unvarnished nativism, but it takes on another dimension when she’s referring to the son of an immigrant with no grandparents born in the U.S., who also had several of his children with women who were immigrants as well.
“President Trump is a second generation immigrant through his Scottish-born mother and a third generation immigrant through his German-born paternal grandparents,” a context note on X reads, linking to Trump’s Wikipedia page.
