Veteran politico warns Americans to remain vigilant against Trump: “Worse is to come”

Political expert Robert Reich, who served as President Bill Clinton’s secretary of labor and is now a professor of public policy at the University of California, Berkeley, said that despite several recent wins against the Trump administration, he still fears “worse is to come.”

In a recent blog post, Reich explained that the current actions by the Trump administration – such as intensive ICE recruitment strategies and fears that the administration will do anything it can to “fiddle with ballots, change results, or prevent certifications” in midterm elections – are enough to give him that feeling.

Nevertheless, it’s not the only reason he can’t quite cling to optimism right now.

“Mostly I fear worse to come because time and again – especially when he feels like he’s losing – Trump doubles down on stupid. (He just announced, for example, that in light of the Supreme Court’s tariff decision, he’s imposing a 15 percent tariff on every country we trade with around the world). And his toadies – Pam Bondi, Pete Hegseth, Kristi Noem, Stephen Miller, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. – double down on their cruel mindlessness, if only to demonstrate to Trump their kindred stupidity.”

Yes, the Supreme Court recently struck down many of Trump’s tariffs, and yes, there has been a reduction in ICE agents in Minneapolis, but Reich reminded Americans that ICE activity has actually just moved into the Twin Cities’ suburbs rather than subsided.

He reminded readers of our country’s surge in measles cases to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s anti-vax campaign, and he noted that the United States is still attacking fishing boats near Central America without any proof that there are drugs on board.

But Reich does not advise throwing up our hands and giving up. Instead, his message is to mobilize, to recognize that the wins we’ve already had are not enough, and that we must keep fighting.

“You and I and all sane Americans cannot relax our vigilance,” he said. “In fact, we must mount an even more powerful resistance to this ongoing calamity.”
