Model and former America’s Next Top Model judge Jessica White stirred controversy on Wednesday for saying that it’s acceptable for women but not men to be bisexual.

TMZ asked White to name “something that is fine when a girl does it but an ‘ick’ when a guy does it.”

“Double standards exist for all of us, right?” she said. “But women have an ability to have more freedom to explore their sexuality, I believe.”

TMZ called it a “spicy opinion” and emphasized the way she “doubles down” in her comment.

Her thoughts have sparked a wave of biphobia. Video of the interview was posted to a celebrity news Instagram account, The Neighborhood Talk, which was subsequently flooded with comments agreeing that there is “no such thing as a bisexual man” or claiming that men who claim to be bisexual are really gay.

Some women in the comments said they’d never date a bisexual man, with one saying they lose “all masculine energy.”

There were, however, some people defending bisexual men mixed throughout, with several pointing out that it’s these attitudes that keep so many bisexual men hiding who they are.

Psychologist Dr. Robin Hornstein explained to Verywell Mind that toxic masculinity in part fuels increased stigma that afflicts bisexual men.

“Our society, in general, has very strong notions of people’s lives and choices, especially sexually,” Hornstein said. “Men (cis and trans) are supposed to behave like ‘men.’ The words ‘men’ or ‘man’ imply certain behavioral, emotional, financial, sexual expectations, including some of the more toxic and fraught parts of ‘manliness.'”

Hornstein added that bisexual men are often “dismissed as gay” due to the fact that gay men were forced to masquerade as bisexual and enter into heterosexual marriages for so much of history.

“For a man to be able to be with cis or trans women or men makes that cis man too unrecognizable and historically just a hidden gay man. If they are in a traditional relationship with a woman, the stories we hear are more that she is the cover for him being gay, not a partner who is aware and accepting of his bisexuality,” Hornstein said.

In 2020, researchers even conducted a study to determine whether bisexual men really exist (spoiler alert: it determined they do).

“These findings are important, since research routinely shows higher mental health risks and experiences of rejection for bisexual youth and adults related to stigma,” Caitlin Ryan of the Family Acceptance Project at San Francisco State University told HealthDay Reporter at the time.

“People who identify as bisexual – especially men – are often viewed with suspicion, and this includes a perception that they won’t commit to being gay,” she said. “They are often discriminated against and stigmatized.”
