Pete Hegseth wants taxpayers to pay $52.2 million to illegally rename the Department of Defense

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is asking Congress to give the Pentagon $52.5 million in taxpayer funds so that the Trump Administration can illegally change the Department of Defense’s name to the “Department of War,” Military Times reported.

Though President Donald Trump signed an executive order in September saying that the department name should be changed to reflect the military’s “readiness and resolve,” only Congress can permanently rename executive department names, and it has not done so in this case.

Hegseth’s $52.2 million request is far lower than the $125 million estimated cost for broad and rapid renaming calculated by the Congressional Budget Office in January.

Trump is asking Congtess for $1.5 trillion in extra defense spending to help cover his illegal Iran war, which Congress hasn’t approved either and which is now streetching into its eighth week and has cost U.S. taxpayers $25 billion so far (roughly $416.6 million dollars each day).

Trump has claimed the military “excursion” is not a war, even as he has threatened to commit genocide and war crimes by wiping out the entirety of the Iranian people. Peace talks with Iran have stalled, providing no end in sight for the conflict.
