It took this gay dad years to have a baby. Now he’s educating others on the ins & outs of surrogacy.

A gay father who had a baby with his husband through surrogacy has dedicated himself to educating others on the overwhelming process.

Kevin and his husband of 20 years, Michael, used SurrogacyUK to expand their family. He described the organization to Pink News as “Facebook for surrogates and people who want surrogates.”

“The fact she’s chosen to do this for us is just outstanding…. It’s a special kind of relationship without a name. She’s not a sister, aunt, or cousin, but she is family. We stay in touch regularly.”

With SurrogacyUK, he explained, the surrogate is the one in the driver’s seat. “She chooses how she wants to help, it’s an altruistic thing. They get their expenses covered, that’s it.”

It is against U.K. law for surrogates to be paid, other than reimbursement for associated expenses, so anyone carrying a child for someone else is doing so out of the goodness of their heart.

Kevin’s YouTube channel, KPB, walks prospective British parents through the process, which is not as streamlined as it is in the U.S., according to Helen Prosser, co-founder of the first organization in the U.K. to provide a fully managed path to parenthood through surrogacy.

“There are going to be bumps in the road but we want to ensure that when they come, it’s from a place of stability, and that everyone feels positive about the outcome,” Prosser told PinkNews, adding that there’s a huge shortage of surrogates and it often takes years to find one.

Kevin said his own journey to fatherhood was “four years in the making,” and he isn’t done. Now that his daughter has been born, he and his husband are working on the legal parentage aspect of it all.

Still, he’s so happy she is finally here.

“I can’t quite believe she’s going to stay with us now,” he said.
