The president’s tariff debacle could be costing Republicans support in the upcoming midterm elections, a new poll from RMG Research suggests.
The latest poll from the firm found that, if the midterms were held today, 48% of registered voters said they would vote for the Democrat on their ballot, while only 44% said they would vote for a Republican. That’s a large swing since February, when Republicans had the lead with 51% of the vote and Democrats were behind with only 44% of the vote.

Democrats really need to rethink what the party is about
The party needs to stop pretending that it’s politics as usual and re-orient itself around a set of principles.
But a lot has happened since then, and it seems like economic issues are dragging the GOP down. Another poll found that 42% of respondents trust Democrats more when it comes to inflation, while only 38% said they trust Republicans more on that issue.
Another April poll—performed from April 11 to 13 by Morning Consult—found that Democrats were more trusted with the economy than Republicans. This is the first time Democrats have held a lead on that poll question since May 2021, shortly after President Joe Biden took office.
And a CNBC poll conducted between April 9 and 13 found that only 43% approved of the president’s handling of the economy, while 55% disapproved.
The president “was re-elected specifically to improve the economy, and so far, people are not liking what they’re seeing,” said Jay Campbell of Hart Associates.
