“She’s incredibly intelligent, bookish, shy but spunky, and a total sweetheart,” the mom gushed. “Gorgeous, curly red hair and freckles.”
The post garnered almost three thousand responses. While many suggested names, others dropped in to praise the heartwarming situation.
“I instantly teared up when I read this,” one commenter wrote. “You are really doing something right that your daughter is choosing to invite you so intimately into this process. I have a handful of friends who are transgender with various degrees of support from their families, but none that felt like their parents were so reaffirming and supportive of who they are that it felt right that they still received their name from them. Ugh, my whole heart is so happy reading this!”
Another person called the post “so f**king wholesome” and “a beautiful bonding opportunity.”
“Don’t have name suggestions yet but wanted to quickly say I love this post and wish you the best of luck finding a beautiful name,” a third commenter said.
A fourth added, “I’m also just really looking to get in here and tell you how happy this made me. You all sound just lovely and I wish you nothing but joy.”
Another person said they were “very pregnant” and that the post made them “sob.”
“This speaks so much to your relationship and how much she loves and values you. I’m sorry I don’t have an actual suggestion, I just wanted to share that moms (and people) like you are so very needed in the world and this makes me so happy.”
The mom also posted a follow-up to let folks know which name she chose.
“I am the incredibly proud mama of Esther Miriam!” she wrote. “I absolutely love it, and so does she. ‘Essie May’ evolved as a nickname from her father overnight, and it made me fall in love even more… Esther also has immense meaning to us as Jews, and I can absolutely say that 2006 me would’ve chosen it.”
She also thanked those who commented with suggestions.
“The love far outweighed the hate, and we were absolutely awestruck by the support.”
