Nicki Minaj hits back at gay fans’ criticism of pro-Trump post
November 06 2025, 08:15

Rapper Nicki Minaj has responded after being criticised by LGBTQ+ fans for sharing a post praising Donald Trump’s support of Christians in Nigeria.

On Saturday (1 November), on X, formerly Twitter, Nicki Minaj posted a screenshot of a post Trump had shared on his own social media platform Truth Social on 31 October. In the post, Trump raised concerns about the “existential threat” faced by Christians in Nigeria.

“Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” he wrote, adding that Nigeria would be noted as a “Country of Particular Concern”.

The term is a designation by the US Secretary of State to indicate a nation “engaged in severe violations of religious freedom”. Trump did not provide evidence of the “thousands” killed in Nigeria, and earlier this week, a spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that “there is no Christian genocide in Nigeria”.

In her post, the “Super Bass” rapper and Christian said she felt “a deep sense of gratitude” for Donald Trump and his support for Christianity.

Reading this made me feel a deep sense of gratitude. We live in a country where we can freely worship God.

No group should ever be persecuted for practicing their religion. We don’t have to share the same beliefs in order for us to respect each other.

“We live in a country where we can freely worship God. No group should ever be persecuted for practicing their religion. We don’t have to share the same beliefs in order for us to respect each other,” she wrote.

“Numerous countries all around the world are being affected by this horror & it’s dangerous to pretend we don’t notice.

“Thank you to The President & his team for taking this seriously. God bless every persecuted Christian. Let’s remember to lift them up in prayer.”

Backlash to Minaj’s post was swift, with many fans pointing out that Trump is notorious for his anti-LGBTQ+ policies, which is at odds with Minaj’s undeniably large LGBTQ+ supporter base.

In a series of since-deleted posts on X, Minaj responded to the backlash, urging that her support for Trump’s defence of Christians did not detract from her support of LGBTQ+ rights.

“Imagine hearing that Christians are being persecuted & not being able to have empathy for THEM b/c you are blinded by your own personal obsession with Trump…. This says more about you than him, my darling,” she wrote in response to one upset fan.

In another post, also replying to a fan who criticised her, she wrote: “Imagine hearing that Christians are being MURDERED & making it about you being gay.”

“When my home was swatted multiple times with my innocent toddler inside (with maybe 20 officers with guns drawn pointed at our home due to political corruption), you being gay couldn’t save me. Expecting someone to stay oppressed, abused, targeted, harassed & CONSISTENTLY ignored by public figures who were supposed to be helping them says more about you than it does anyone else.”

Minaj said that she would “adovcate” for LGBTQ+ people “in the same that [she is] advocating for MURDERED CHRISTIANS IN NIGERIA.”

“Like I always have. Just remember that. Diligently. Compassionately. Just remember that part, too!!!!”
