Donald Trump recently revealed he doesn’t understand how mortgages work, providing further evidence that he has no idea how everyday Americans live their lives.

In a recent interview with Fox News’s Laura Ingraham, the host asked about the administration’s proposal for a 50-year mortgage, which she said has angered many members of the president’s MAGA base.

Trump replied that “it’s not even a big deal” because you’d “go from 40 years to 50.” Ingraham was quick to correct him that standard mortgages actually last 30 years. As such, a 50-year mortgage would add twenty more years of debt and interest to a homeowner’s life.

While monthly payments would be lower, interest would increase massively over the life of the loan. One expert said the numbers would be “staggering.”

Folks on social media berated the president for having no understanding of housing-market basics and for calling such a large change no big deal. Several of the comments also came from folks who said they supported him for the past decade and have finally had it.

He never pays any of his bills so of course it’s not a big deal to him! He already thought people had 40 year mortgages!
