Gay couple dressed as Disney princes get engaged in heartwarming fairy tale proposal
January 13 2025, 08:15

A gay couple in Spain have sparked queer joy with their fairy tale engagement.

Jose Casanova proposed to his fiancé, actor, director, dancer, and Zumba instructor Cristian Brocal, during a Three Kings Day event in Beniel, a town in Spain’s Murcia region, while they were both dressed as Disney princes.

The Little Mermaid was originally a ‘love letter’ to the author’s male crush
The author of the original “The Little Mermaid” was bisexual and he wrote it after his male crush rejected him.

On Monday, January 6, feminist LGBTQ+ collective Epéntica Beniel shared a video on Instagram of the heartwarming moment, which came at the tail end of what appeared to be a flashmob style performance featuring participants dressed as classic Disney characters. As the performers take their bows, a woman dressed as Belle from Beauty and the Beast can be seen handing a red cushion to Casanova, who was dressed as the Beast’s human counterpart, Prince Adam (Did anyone else know that character had an actual name?). Casanova then turns and approaches Brocal, dressed as Aladdin in his Prince Ali finery.

Brocal is visibly taken aback, halting mid bow as he realizes what’s happening. After fumbling with a box on the cushion, Casanova kneels as Brocal nods. The two princes kiss and embrace as the crowd, including performers dressed as Princess Jasmine, Snow White, Ursula the Sea Witch, and the Queen of Hearts cheer and shower them with confetti.

“Because every boy and girl deserves to grow up with LGBTQ+ references in their stories, learning that love, in all its forms, is as real and brave as fairytales,” the caption to Epéntica Beniel’s post reads, according to Instagram’s translation. “Today we not only celebrate our commitment to a world where equal marriage is an unquestionable right, but also the fight for all public spaces, narratives, festivities, expression of desire and sexual liberation to belong to all people.”

“May [children] grow up knowing that love and desire in all its forms is worthy of fairy tales with a happy ending but above all reality.”

Brocal responded to the post with a comment thanking the collective for sharing the moment.

“From this kid who always dreamed of his own fairytale ending, but always thought the story wasn’t written for him,” he wrote. “I mean we ALL deserve a happy ending. And that it’s time to rewrite the tale.”

On Tuesday, Brocal reposted the clip to his own Instagram. “We all deserve a fairytale ending,” he wrote. “But this is just the beginning.”

He went on to describe the proposal as “the most magical moment I have ever experienced.”

“I have no words,” Brocal added. “Just thanks to life, and thanks to you @josecasanova_1988. I couldn’t be happier. All I can say is… I’M GETTING MARRIED!”
