Amazon removes section on LGBTQ+ rights from its policy page

Amazon has joined the slew of companies rolling back its DEI efforts in apparent celebration of Donald Trump’s “anti-woke” agenda. The changes specifically target LGBTQ+ people, with the section on LGBTQ+ rights being completely removed from its Positions page.

The section once emphasized that the company would continue to fight “for protection and equal rights rights for transgender people” as well as for the passage of the Equality Act. Now, the only mention of LGBTQ+ people on the page is as part of a list of marginalized communities against which the company supposedly does not tolerate “inequitable treatment.”

Zuckerberg’s policies are part of a growing anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment and a shift away from diversity, equity and inclusion.

The page also once stated that “Amazon provides gender transition benefits based on the Standards of Care published by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).” The removal of this statement has employees worried that they are losing this benefit, but the company told the Washington Post – which is owned by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos – that it is still available.

A section entitled “Equity for Black people” was also removed from the Positions page.

The tech giant also renamed a page for prospective employees from “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” to “Inclusive Experiences and Technology.” Where it once claimed to “advance DEI through technology,” it now promises to “advance the employee experience.”

With these moves, Amazon joins a wave of corporate retailers buckling under pressure from right-wing groups to shed their DEI initiatives, including Walmart, Stanley Black & Decker, Molson CoorsJack Daniels, Ford Motor Company, John DeereLowe’s Hardware, Target and Harley-Davidson.

Earlier this month, McDonald’s, the world’s largest fast-food chain, announced it was retiring “aspirational representation goals” and would pause survey submissions to third-party groups including the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, among other concessions to anti-DEI activists.

And in the tech world, Amazon’s rollbacks are apparently becoming par for the course. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has launched an anti-LGBTQ+ policy spree this month, seemingly emboldened by the election results to do whatever he wants.

Zuckerberg, Bezos, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Apple CEO Tim Cook have also all donated $1 million to Donald Trump’s inaugural fund.

Despite all of this, the Human Rights Campaign’s  2025 Corporate Equality Index (CEI) found that, in fact, there has been an increase in companies committed to improving LGBTQ+ inclusion and equality in the workplace.

The annual report, which debuted in 2002, measures U.S. companies’ policies and practices related to LGBTQ+ workplace equality and has been a leading force in improving LGBTQ+ employees’ workplace experience.
