Pete kinda announces 2028 bid, court delivers pro-trans decision & Trump says something weird
Photo #9651 April 20 2026, 08:15

Montana’s Supreme Court issued a strong ruling in favor of trans people’s right to accurate IDs

What the ruling said: “Transgender discrimination is, by its very nature, sex discrimination,” Justice Laurie McKinnon wrote. Government-issued identification documents are necessary to access public life. When they do not accurately reflect a person’s sexual identity, the transgender Montanan is prevented, based on their sex, from obtaining the same attributes of public life that a cisgender Montanan may obtain.”

Why it matters: Not only will this help trans people in Montana get accurate IDs, it is another judicial decision that uses the reasoning that anti-trans discrimination is a form of sex-based discrimination, similar to what the U.S. Supreme Court decided in Bostock v. Clayton Co. in 2020. Republicans generally interpret discrimination law in the opposite way, arguing that acknowledging trans rights is sexist against women.

Donald Trump tried – and failed – to bond with a DoorDasher over hating trans people in sports

It was awkward: “Do you think that men should play in women’s sports?” Trump randomly asked DoorDash driver Sharon Simmons at a staged event this week. “I really don’t have an opinion on that,” she responded. He then said that she was there to deliver “pizza” even though she brought McDonald’s food.

Why it matters: Dude has the nuclear codes, and this is how his mind works.

Pete Buttigieg pretty much just said that he’s going to run for president in 2028

What happened: When the Rev. Al Sharpton had lunch with Buttigieg during his first presidential campaign in 2020, Sharpton asked if he should expect to have lunch with Buttigieg as a presidential candidate again sometime in the future. Buttigieg replied, “You save me a seat. I’ll be there.”

Why it matters: Buttigieg is the only out LGBTQ+ person to ever win a state’s primary contest (Iowa in 2020) and is one of the few out LGBTQ+ people in a position to make such a run in 2028.

Senegal sentenced a 24-year-old to six years of prison under its new anti-homosexuality law

What happened: Laborer Mbaye Diouf was sentenced to prison for public indecency and committing “unnatural acts.” This is the first case to be tried under the country’s new law that doubled the punishment for homosexuality. Interrogators somehow got him to confess that he paid another man $3.57 for sex.

Why it matters: LGBTQ+ people in Africa are facing more and more harsh punishments as several countries have become even more merciless in their mistreatment of LGBTQ+ people.

Dave Chappelle complains that Republicans “weaponized” his anti-trans jokes

It makes no sense: Chappelle never apologized for attacking trans people as they face a nationwide, concerted effort to curtail their rights. Instead, he blamed Republicans for “doing a weaponized version of what I was doing,” adding, “That’s not what I was doing.” He didn’t explain what he was doing if it wasn’t attacking trans people for their identities.

Why it matters: Chappelle is one of several prominent voices turning against the current president and the Republican party as its popularity craters. Perhaps he won’t do these kinds of jokes in the future.
