
Contrary to all credible reports, Donald Trump continues to claim the economy is thriving and that everyday necessities are becoming more affordable.
But according to CNN’s chief data analyst Harry Enten, Americans aren’t buying it. Enten cited a University of Michigan poll that showed consumer sentiment regarding current conditions is at its worst ever, dating back to 1951.

“This is record-breaking in the way you don’t want to be breaking records,” Enten said, adding that the number is “down 30% since January, when Donald Trump took office.”
Data also shows that Americans blame the president for the challenges. Enten said 61 percent of Americans believe Trump’s policies have worsened economic conditions, and 51 percent say they have hurt their own finances. “This is double trouble for the president of the United States,” he said.

He also assessed “pure independents,” which he defined as folks who do not lean toward the left or right, and he couldn’t help but laugh at the staggering numbers.
“I’m laughing because you rarely ever see a number this high,” he said. “79 percent of pure independents disapprove of Trump on the economy.”
“When you put it all together with the approval ratings, it averages out to a net approval rating on the economy among pure independents of get this, minus-58 points,” Enten said. “Oy vey, as my mother used to say.”
Enten said these numbers are “political nightmare fuel” and that if these numbers hold, Republicans will have a very bad midterms.
