Starting in January, the leader of every committee in the House of Representatives will be a straight, cis, white man for the first time in several decades.
House Appropriations Committee Chairperson Tom Cole (R-OK) announced the Republican party’s recommendations for committee chairs for next year, and the list is getting attention on social media for its uniformity.

Currently, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) is the chair of the House Education and Workforce Committee and Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) is the chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Both are women. McMorris Rodgers did not seek reelection this past year, while Foxx has reached her six-year term limit as a committee chair, a rule imposed by Republican leadership. They will both be replaced by men.
There are no out LGBTQ+ Republican members of Congress. There are 34 Republican women in the House.
Republicans celebrated the list.
“From securing our southern border, to unleashing American energy, to fighting to lower Bidenflation, and making our communities safe again, our Committee Chairs are ready to get to work fulfilling the American people’s mandate and enacting President Trump’s America-First agenda,” said House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) in a statement.
ABC News says that the last time there were no women leading a standing committee was 2006, which was also when Republicans controlled the House.
Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) will be the chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and he has two grandparents who are from Mexico.
