Grimes denounces white supremacy after her ex Elon Musk throws Nazi salute
February 01 2025, 08:15

Grimes, the gender-neutral and queer pop singer, denounced Nazism and white supremacy after the father of her three children, transphobic billionaire Elon Musk, threw a Nazi salute at Donald Trump’s inauguration. Musk also recently told a German far-right political rally that the country needed to move past its “guilt” over slaughtering six million Jewish people during World War II.

Grimes had initially refused to comment on Musk’s Nazi salute when asked to do so by social media commenters, stating, “While I deeply respect your concern – it is unhealthy that people are this upset when I have not even been online yet today and am only just learning about this controversy now. I don’t know what happened and I will not make a rash statement – I am not a citizen of this country,” PinkNews reported.

Grimes says she’s “way less gay” after having three kids with Elon Musk
How gay the Canadian musician, singer and songwriter was to begin with is unclear.

“I am not him,” she added. “I will not make a statement every time he does something. I can only send love back into a world that is hurting. To be clear I could go talk s**t and be on a bunch of magazine covers and be a feminist hero and get clout – but it would serve no purpose. I choose my children’s wellbeing.”

Grimes has undergone a lengthy custody battle with Musk, the richest man in the world, over the custody of their three children — X Æ A-Xii, Exa Dark Sideræl, and Techno Mechanicus — after she left Musk and began dating infamous transgender military data leaker Chelsea Manning. Grimes wrote that the year-long legal battle had nearly bankrupted her, resulted in her not seeing one of her children in five months and had transformed Musk into someone “unrecognizable” to her.

In a subsequent post, Grimes wrote, “If it wasn’t clear – I very much denounce Nazi-ism and white supremacy. I am sorry I didn’t take this more seriously sooner, I did not realise the extent of the issue.”

Grimes has previously been accused of bigotry after she publicly said that she was “proud of white culture.” In subsequent statements, she also praised other overlooked cultural figures from other racial backgrounds and called herself a “human supremacist,” writing, “What if humans just loved each other? History teaches us that we have all been, and always will be – great.”

Musk has a history of supporting far-right extremists and specifically neo-Nazis. Last year, his company X gave “Premium” blue checkmarks to at least 150 paid neo-Nazi subscribers. These subscriber accounts regularly violated X’s policies against hate speech by reposting hateful views, swastika imagery, Holocaust denialism, speeches from Adolf Hitler, and antisemitic content praising violence against Jews and other groups.

On his social media platform X, Musk has liked posts stating that Jewish communities have been pushing “hatred against whites” and are ushering an invasion by “hordes of minorities.” His views echo the conspiratorial “Great Replacement Theory” which suspects a world-controlling Jewish cabal of replacing white Christians with darker-skinned people of different beliefs.

Last Saturday, Musk appeared via webcam at a campaign event for Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, a group that has been identified as an extremist organization by the country’s national security services. During the rally, Musk told the crowd of 4,500 attendees, “There is too much focus on past guilt, and we need to move beyond that. Children should not be guilty of the sins of their parents, let alone their great-grandparents.”

Though Musk didn’t specifically mention the Holocaust, Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticized him, stating, “The words we heard from the main actors of the AfD rally about ‘Great Germany’ and ‘the need to forget German guilt for Nazi crimes’ sounded all too familiar and ominous. Especially only hours before the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.”

Musk defended himself after throwing the Nazi salute by writing on X,  “Frankly they need better dirty tricks. The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired.”
