Birdi Hilleren’s family stopped at a Phoenix, Arizona, In-and-Out Burger restaurant to enjoy a quick meal before their flight home. That’s when a Christian woman accused Hilleren and her wife, who are white, of sex trafficking their Asian daughter.
The woman, who claimed to be “an undercover cop,” then tried to abduct their daughter and kicked Hilleren’s wife in the stomach when they tried to stop her. When confronted by others, the woman loudly sang Christian hymns in Spanish, repeatedly saying she would call 911. She then threatened to “kick somebody’s teeth out” if they tried to restrain her.

Though the incident occurred in 2024, Hilleren recently posted the video to Facebook because she feels afraid in the current political climate, which has increasingly targeted LGBTQ+ people. Her video is garnering sympathy and outrage from viewers who are trying to identify the attacker. Numerous commenters noted that Republicans have long accused queer people of sex trafficking children.

“So, this happened to my family on a vacation to Arizona,” Hilleren wrote when publishing the video online. “We hoped to enjoy an uncommon treat at an In-and-Out Burger before our flight home. We were all shook and fearful for our safety. I don’t get it.”
The video begins with a woman in a maroon shirt that has the word “faith” written on it saying, “Sex trafficked? I don’t think so. You’re on candid camera,” and adding, “Yeah, I’m an undercover cop. I’m undercover.” As Hilleren’s wife suggests calling 911, the woman yells to the restaurant, “Call 911!”
The woman approaches the lesbian couple’s crying college-aged daughter and tells Hilleren’s wife, “Get away from her, you b**ch. Get away.” The woman then tries to grab the couple’s daughter as the daughter screams, “No!” When her mother pushes the woman’s hands away, the woman kicks the child’s mother in the abdomen.
Hilleren’s wife yells, “What the hell is the matter with you?” Hilleren then restrains the attacker and calmly asks, “Hey, c’mon. What do you want? What are you doing?”
The attacker (who wears sunglasses over her prescription glasses) responds, “What are you doing, bi**h?” She then flips the lesbian women off. The woman restraining the attacker says, “Calm down.”
The attacker says, “You’re a lesbian woman and so is she!”
“Yes,” Hilleren says. “So what?”
When an employee confronts the women and tells the attacker she has to leave, the attacker then begins loudly singing one line of the hymn “Jesus Loves Me” in Spanish. As Hilleren and her family begin to leave, Hilleren’s wife explains to an employee that the Christian woman has assaulted her and that they have it all on camera. The woman then begins singing the Spanish hymn again.
But as the family tries walking away, the attacker reaches out to grab the couple’s daughter again, and the daughter begins audibly sobbing. and Hilleren’s wife says, “Hey, don’t you touch her. That’s my daughter.” The woman points at Hilleren’s wife and says, “You don’t touch her.”
One of the spouses tells the restaurant employee to call the police, and the attacker raises her hand and says, “Call the police.” She then confronts the child yet again and beckons her, saying, “Come here, baby.” Hilleren’s wife tells her child, “Stay with me,” and the attacker begins loudly singing the hymn again.
Hilleren asks her, “What is the matter with you?”
As a gray-haired man in a blue shirt tries to pull the attacker away, the woman says, “I’ve had some self-defense and I can kick somebody’s teeth out,” and she repeatedly says, “No,” as the man encourages her to leave the family alone.
The attacker then announces, “I worked at Dysart for five years.” Her comment may refer to the Dysart Unified School District in Phoenix, Arizona.
As the family tries to leave the restaurant once more, the attacker then walks quickly towards the women’s daughter. One of the mothers yells, “Stop! Stop! Leave her alone.”
The attacker responds, “I’m calling the police.”
One of the mothers says, “Please do.”
Another man in a blue t-shirt and black shorts then offers to walk the family to their car. One of the lesbian women says, “Thank you so much, sir.”
In a comment about the video, Hilleren wrote, “What triggered it for me was my daughter came home from college recently and wanted information of her adoption, worried if she was going to be safe.”
LGBTQ Nation contacted Hilleren for additional comment. This article will be updated if she responds. Her video has gained over 295,000 views and 814 shares on Facebook since she posted it on Tuesday morning.
Numerous commenters in the video noted the Republicans have long vilified LGBTQ+ people as “groomers” who are trying to “indoctrinate” children into sexual abuse. Numerous conspiracy theorists have claimed that gay individuals run secret child sex-trafficking rings, even though there is absolutely no evidence to support these theories. Such theorists never align themselves with actual organizations that exist to fight child sex trafficking.
