Lena Dunham spoke out in support of trans rights outside the U.S. Capitol on Trans Day of Visibility.
The Girls creator, writer and star made a rare appearance in public on Sunday (31 March) to advocate for trans rights with the Christopher Street Project. The organisation “builds and leverages political power to make equity a reality for transgender people across the country”.
The American Horror Story actress denounced the “horrific government abuses” at the hands of the Trump-Vance administration. “We must help protect the civil rights of our trans friends and family,” Dunham told fellow campaigners at the Washington, D.C. Transgender Day of Visibility rally.
Dunham added that the trans community and allies must “stand strong in the face of such hatred and misunderstanding” despite the “dangers and traumas trans people face today, and the hard truths about how trans people are valued by the current leadership of this country”.

The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star also reflected on her relationship with her trans brother, Cyrus Grace Dunham. “When my sister came out as trans, I learned that I actually never had a sister at all, but a wise, funny, resilient, powerful, remarkable brother,” she told the crowd.
“I found that the greatest [person] you could have in your corner was not a sister, but it was a happy and embodied sibling and just as divine, a trans person in your family.
“The experience of going through my brother’s transition has been a profound gift to our family. We have laughed, we have cried, we have learned and re-learned and laughed some more.”
She continued, quipping, “You really have not lived until you have seen a 75-year-old, white, cis man standing in the middle of a party of trans girls trying to call an outfit ‘a slay.’ He really tried, and we love that for him.”
Dunham spoke to the trans and non-binary community directly, telling them: “We love you, we see you, we bow down to your charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent, and we are so lucky to love you and to fight with you and for you, to learn from you, and to ensure that our rights are inseparable from yours.”
Dunham concluded her speech with the words: “Trans liberation is our liberation. And without it, none of us are free.”
