April 03 2025, 08:15 Tesla sales have plummeted by the largest drop in the company’s history. It comes amid backlash following Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) decisions.
According to a Wednesday (2 April) Tesla report, sales in the electric vehicles have plummeted by 13 per cent in the first quarter of the year. This marks the largest drop in deliveries for the brand as the company navigates backlash due to chief executive officer Musk’s controversial political actions as part of DOGE and increasing competition in the EV space.
The company reported that it delivered 336,681 cars in the first three months of 2025, which is 50,000 fewer vehicles compared to the same period in 2024. The results mark the company’s worst sales in almost three years.
The sales plummet comes during a backdrop of protests and boycotts against what critics have started to call “swasticars”, a reference to Musk’s hugely controversial Nazi-style gesture at Trump’s inauguration.
There have also been cases of vandalism at Tesla facilities, including its charging stations and cars. The billionaire has also reportedly lost billions from his net worth since January, when the Trump-Vance administration began.
A group called Everyone Hates Elon has urged the public to boycott the electric car brand. In a March interview, the group told The Hollywood Reporter that the incident at Trump’s inauguration gave them the impetus they needed.
“OK, Elon, if you’re going to show the world who you are, let’s show the world who Tesla really is,” a spokesperson told THR, adding that the car company’s business is where the public can best vote against the tech mogul.
Tesla did not speak about the protests against the company in its sales statement. However, it did mention an update to the Model Y car during the quarter, which temporarily paused production at four of its factories for a period of a few weeks.
