A transgender Russian teenager has died at a refugee detention centre in the Netherlands, an independent Russian outlet has reported.
According to human rights activists cited by the publication, 17-year-old Alisa Serova put in an application for asylum in the Netherlands when she was 16 and was housed Ter Apel refugee detention camp in the northern part of the country, near the German border.
Russian publication Vot Tak claims that the camp should not have accepted her to stay there as a minor, and that she was allegedly raped during her first months at the centre.
Her death was reportedly due to a drug overdose, while a resident told Vot Tak that the teen was “depressed”.
Vot Tak’s reporting suggests Serova’s death is not the first time a Russian refugee has died at Ter Apel, with six other cases referenced.
Around 700 Russian nationals are estimated to be in refugee camps in the Netherlands.
