
A fencer in Maryland took a knee over the weekend rather than face her transgender opponent.
Stephanie Turner, representing the Fencing Academy of Philadelphia, refused to compete against her trans opponent, Redmond Sullivan, at the Cherry Blossom Open tournament at the University of Maryland.

“Preserving the integrity of competition in the female category is a fundamental principle of the sport of athletics,” the organization’s president said.
Turner had already faced four opponents before her bout with Sullivan. As the pair met on the fencing strip, Turner removed her mask and knelt.

She was shown a black card by the referee and disqualified from the competition.
