Crowd cheers lesbian congresswoman as she says she wants to impeach Donald Trump
April 16 2025, 08:15

Out Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT) has said she “absolutely” supports impeaching Donald Trump to a cheering audience. She also explained that voters shouldn’t get their hopes up that it will actually happen with the current Congress.

During a Monday town meeting at the Bellows Falls Opera House in Rockingham, Vermont, a constituent asked Balint, “Do you support the concept of impeachment?” Balint responded, “Oh, my gosh, this is the most corrupt president we’ve ever had! Absolutely!” The audience of over 400 people erupted into applause.

Constituent Lisa Moir urged Balint to do more to get Democratic leadership to take action against Trump and the congressional Republicans who have empowered him, The Battleboro Reformer reported.

“Where is the unified message? Give these people some leadership,” she said to loud applause.

Balint said she felt very disappointed with Democratic leadership but added that impeaching the president would likely not succeed with the Republicans controlling the House. She said that House Republicans who used to criticize Trump have become fearful of him and his followers and are now more worried about protecting their families rather than challenging and voting against him.

If the House brings articles of impeachment against a government official, it can impeach the official through a simple majority vote. However, since House Republicans outnumber Democrats 220 to 213, it’s unlikely that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) would allow such articles to be formally introduced and voted upon.

Nevertheless, Balint expressed some hope that the Republican House majority might fracture if the Supreme Court hands down decisions against Trump’s actions.

“I have more faith in the Supreme Court than I did a few months ago,” she said.

She also urged constituents not to feel overwhelmed with negative political news and encouraged them to focus on a single issue and use it as a platform to oppose the nation’s movement toward authoritarianism.

She told constituents to fight and demonstrate against Trump’s policies, saying, “It matters you showed up. You care about your community.”
