Chappell Roan admits she ‘didn’t know’ what a ‘service top’ was before releasing ‘The Giver’
April 21 2025, 08:15

Chappell Roan might have declared that she “gets the job done” in her latest release, “The Giver”, but the singer didn’t know the meaning of a “service top” until recently.

The sapphic songstress first debuted the country track on Saturday Night Live last year, when she cooed that “only a woman knows how to treat a woman right”.

“‘Cause you ain’t got to tell me, it’s just in my nature. So take it like a taker, ’cause, baby, I’m a giver,” she sang. “Ain’t no need to help me, ’cause, baby, I deliver, ain’t no country boy quitter. I get the job done.”

After teasing snippets of the lesbian anthem via a hotline number shared on billboards in New York, LA and Nashville, she finally released the song this year. Despite the song clearly being an ode to lesbian sex – and being very well received for that reason – Roan admitted that she “didn’t know” what a “service top” was before releasing the track.

Roan appeared on a recent episode of Mutuals Media’s Gaydar with host and drag performer Anania, who playfully begs the question with all her guests, “Are you gay, straight, or a homophobe?”

The star was asked, “What is a service top? And do you identify as one?”

To this, she told host Anania, “I did not know what a service top was ‘til last week, but everyone thinks I know. B****, I don’t know what a service top is.

“I just have sex that feels good,” she said. And that’s tea.

Anania then quipped, “Absolutely! I wish I could say the same.”

The “Pink Pony Club” hitmaker also revealed that Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill is the “album that made her gay”, while also dishing on her dating dealbreakers.

“Long nails is a cop out,” she said, adding, “I know in lesbian relationships, people being friends with their exes and who are living with their exes is, like, a thing. If you’re really close with your ex-girlfriend and we’re dating, let’s just talk about it.”

What is a ‘service top’?

If you don’t know what a service top is, you’re not the only one. “The Giver” queen Chappell Roan admitted herself she wasn’t aware of the meaning of the phrase until recently.

In queer culture, a service top is someone who takes charge and finds pleasure in their partner’s pleasure, which can be both in and out of the bedroom. This could include acts of service like watering the plants, ensuring pets are fed and showing love through action.

Roan leans into this ever-giving vibe with her track, emulating a dentist, lawyer, plumber and construction worker in the marketing materials for “The Giver”, which includes lyrics like, “So take it like a taker/ ‘Cause baby I’m a giver” and “She gets the job done.”

However, it’s important to note that queer relationships often challenge heteronormative binaries and labels including “top”, “bottom” and “switch” don’t have to be set in stone.
