Charli XCX responds after Green Day’s Tré Cool parodies her Coachella ‘Should Be Headliner’ sash

Charli XCX has responded after Green Day’s Tré Cool appeared to parody her iconic Coachella “Miss Should Be Headliner” sash.

If you’ve been hiding under a rock, Coachella – or Bratchella, as it should now be known – returned for 2025. Charli put on a series of performances to end all others at the Indo, California, festival, and seemed to clap back at festival organisers after failing to consider her a headline act.

Despite the singer being arguably the biggest thing in music since her infamous green album dropped in June 2024, rock band Green Day were billed as the headline act of Saturday on weekend one.

In what appeared to be a response to that fact, Charli wore a “Miss Should Be Headliner” sash dress at her private after-party on 12 April at the Guess Jeans compound.

However, Green Day drummer Tré parodied the look by later wearing a sash that read, “Actual Headliner”. The image seems to have been taken backstage at the festival.

However, Charli has quashed any rumours of there being a rift between herself and the band. “Obsessed,” she simply replied on X (formerly Twitter), as she re-shared Tré’s post.

Also responding to the speculation surrounding Charli’s choice of words on the sash, designer Briah Artemis told PAPER Magazine that she didn’t expect the reaction to be so visceral.

“Actually, no, I didn’t even know if she’d get photographed in it…Who knew a white dress with a sash printed on it could be such a topic?”

Artemis added that the goal was to get people talking, though. “That’s actually what Briah Artemis is all about. I want people to have an opinion about my pieces, whether they’re upset or love it. It’s all about evoking an emotion for me.”

Fellow Green Day band member Billie Joe Armstrong also showed his support for the dance music hitmaker, after sporting a Brat hat on stage during the second weekend of Coachella.

The frontman asked to borrow a hat from the audience, and it was soon revealed to be a piece of Charli XCX merch.
