Non-binary Eurovision winner Nemo urges public to rally against UK Supreme Court ruling
April 30 2025, 08:15

Eurovision 2024 winner Nemo has urged the public to take a stand against the UK Supreme Court ruling on the legal definition of a woman by contacting their local MP.

The non-binary singer, who won last year’s competition with their track “The Code”, took to Instagram to urge their followers to “help and support” the trans and non-binary community in light of the UK Supreme Court ruling by taking action and writing to their local MP.

Nemo posted guidance from the non-profit organisation The Trans+ Solidarity Alliance’s Unite 4 Trans Rights campaign for those living in the UK. The post outlines how constituents can contact their local MP and discuss how they are going to protect trans and non-binary people “from harm, exclusion and discrimination” following the ruling.

Charities, LGBTQ+ advocates and allies fear that the ruling could have implications going forward for the trans community, particularly in single-sex spaces. “If you love us, stand with us,” Swiss singer Nemo wrote beneath their post.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Friday (25 April), they reflected that expressing their values both within their music and outside is important to them.

“A big thing for me is talking about my queer experience through my music but also contextualizing it in that way, but then also just standing up for what I believe in. And not being afraid to speak up and encouraging others to speak up as well,” they said.

“It’s a very tough time emotionally, as a trans person,” Nemo said, given the after-shock of the ruling. “It’s hard when there’s so much pushback on something and the only thing you want to do is be able to live and be yourself, not having to worry, not having to hide.

“And if that’s not given, it’s like, how do we even…what can you do?”

However, Nemo expressed their hope for progress in terms of trans rights in the future.

“I have so much hope that things are generally moving forward,” they said. “I think people are generally ready for empathy and for understanding each other.”

Constituents can search for their local MP by postcode or location on the UK Parliament website. Those who wish to write to their MP can use an email template by Unite 4 Trans Rights here.
