May 11 2025, 08:15

Commentators on MSNBC could not contain their laughter after Donald Trump tried to claim that only the good parts of the economy are because of him.

NBC News White House correspondent Kristen Welker asked during an interview, “When does it become the Trump economy?”

“It’s as if they don’t know they’re using the phrase, ‘Let them eat cake.'”

Trump replied: “It partially is right now, and I really mean this: I think the good parts are the Trump economy, and the bad parts are the Biden economy.”

Jared Bernstein, former chairman of the Board of Economic Advisers, reacted to the moment during an appearance on MSNBC host Ana Cabrera’s show.

“Well, my reaction is that if this interview goes well, it’s because of me. And if it goes badly, it’s because of the other panelists,” Bernstein joked.

“It’s as simple as that?” Cabrera responded, cracking up laughing. “That’s what I tell my producers. It’s your fault if I mess up.”

“I can’t imagine anyone hearing that thinking it’s anything other than ridiculous,” Bernstein added, before making it very clear that the so-called “bad parts” of the economy are definitely Trump’s fault.

He then said that there has always been debate about how much impact a president has on the economy, but that in this case, “What’s so unique and interesting and troubling about the Trump presidency thus far is that you really can draw a straight bold line between the problems that we’ve seen and his trade war, along with his attack on fed independence and some other troublesome cats and dogs.

“So this is a case,” he continued, “where certainly the decline in the markets, the decline in consumer and business sentiment, have been very much a function of this president.”

The commentators weren’t the only ones mocking Trump’s comments. Social media users also had a field day.
