May 13 2025, 08:15

Olympic silver medallist (and professional thirst trapper) Gus Kenworthy has announced that he is coming out of retirement, and will aim for his fourth Olympics.

The out gay skiier, who won silver at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014 and came out the following year, later competed in PyeongChang in 2018.

In 2022, Kenworthy retired, dropping out of the Beijing Winter Olympics after a nasty crash, telling Olympics.com that it was his, “Swan song. I’m done, I’m done competing. I’ve had a career that I’m really, really proud of.”

But now, three years later, Kenworthy has announced that, inbetween making Beanie Baby-covered jockstraps and giving everyone a free show, launching an LGBTQ+ book club for banned books with Dylan Mulvaney and dishing on his new boo, he is ready to get back on the slopes.

Speaking to ESPN, the first out gay action sports star revealed that he is now eyeing up his fourth Olympics in 2026, which wilol be held in Italy, known as Milano-Cortina.

“After taking a step away, I realized I miss skiing and I really want to compete again,” Kenworthy said.

“I didn’t know if I would be able to come back after three-and-a-half years, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to after seven and a half. So, it’s this Olympics or nothing. I’m never going to have this opportunity again.”

Kenworthy competed for the USA in his first two Games, but for the UK in his third. He will represent the UK in Italy, should he qualify.

Speaking about his performance in Beijing, Gus Kenworthy said, “My whole goal in China was to land the run I had been training as best as I could, and I didn’t do that.

“I had already announced that it was going to be my last contest. I was ready to be done, and I walked away with my head held high. But it wasn’t what I wanted. It was hard to walk away on a sour note.”

He added, “I don’t feel like I’m going back into it because I don’t know who I am otherwise,” he said. “I’m going back into it because I can still do it, and because I want to.”

Kenworthy has also started a fledgling TV career, with appearances in the American Horror Story franchise and as a guest star on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.
