Glee star Alex Newell has a scathing message for Republicans, telling them to “read a book.”
The non-binary actor is perhaps best known for their role as Unique Adams on the Ryan Murphy comedy/drama, and has recently appeared in the comedy/thriller Another Simple Favor as Stephanie’s publicist, Vicky.
After appearing alongside the likes of Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick and Henry Golding in the Amazon Prime Video film, Newell told PRIDE about what it was like having their “White Lotus motif”.
“I’ve always admired everyone in this film. It was a dream to get to work with all of them,” Newell continued. “I pinch myself every now and again because it is a dream come true. Another one, thank you! It’s an honour, truly.”
The star also commented on their platform, given the political landscape in the US, which feels particularly difficult for trans and non-binary people right now.
“It means the world. It shows that there’s value in telling the story the way that I tell the story. Somebody’s going to resonate with it. Somebody’s going to see themselves in it. It’s always a pleasure and an honour. We have to check in on each other and really come together as a community.”
Newell also had some words for those right-wing pundits whose ideologies are harming the trans and non-binary community.
“Read a book! Open a book,” they said. “Read it and don’t let it just be a picture book! Get a dictionary. Learn some words. Sorry, learn to read! Honestly, please. It takes just like knowing that blue is blue and green is green.”
