Lorde announces new single ‘Man of the Year’ after addressing gender identity
May 20 2025, 08:15

Lorde’s new song “Man of the Year” follows the singer’s public revelations about gender identity.

More music from Lorde is coming, people! The New Zealand-born artist is well and truly feeding us for Lorde summer 2025 (as coined by Charli XCX at Coachella) with her huge hit “What Was That”.

But the star has assured fans there’s more where that came from ahead of her album Virgin, which drops next month. The “Mood Ring” star took to Instagram on Monday (19 May) to announce her new song.

“Man Of The Year. An offering from really deep inside me. The song I’m proudest of on Virgin. Out next week. Shot by Talia Chetrit,” she wrote beneath the image. The cover art for the single appears to show the star’s torso with duct tape across her chest and seems to hark back to her recent Met Gala appearance

The track announcement comes after the star has been open about her gender identity, telling Rolling Stone in a recent interview that she is “in the middle, gender-wise”, and told Chappell Roan, “I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man.”

She also told artist Martine Syms for the culture magazine Document Journal that the album was in part inspired by her “coming into [her] masculinity” and experiencing her “gender broadening a little bit”.

Her recent appearance at the Met Gala, in which she wore a silver two-piece set by Thom Browne, which included a binder-like bandeau, also represented this stage of her life “gender-wise”.

“This is custom Thom Browne, It’s kind of my creation. It’s something of an easter egg,” the two-time Grammy Award-winner shared.

“All will be revealed. I just love the open back. To me, it represents where I’m at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman, you know?”

In an email sent to her fans after announcing Virgin, Lorde wrote that she was “scared” of the album as she would be “putting the deepest parts” of herself into the music.

The singer added that she was “trying to make a document that reflected [her] femininity: raw, primal, innocent, elegant, openhearted, spiritual, masc”.

Lorde’s upcoming single “Man of the Year” is set to arrive next week.
