And Just Like That… star Cynthia Nixon has stood by her character’s “messy” queer storyline in the series.
Warning: And Just Like That… spoilers ahead.
The trans advocate and out queer actress, who has appeared in the franchise since the original Sex and the City series, plays Miranda Hobbes, a corporate lawyer-come-fashion icon.

Those keeping up with the series will know that Miranda finally ditched Steve and has come into her queer identity after hitting it off with Sara Ramírez’s Che Diaz, a non-binary podcast host.
Nixon recently revealed that she was the one championing her character’s queer awakening. She told The Advocate that she had conversations with series creator Michael Patrick King, and said that Miranda was already a “homegrown queer character”. She asked the showrunner prior to the reboot series airing, “Why not go there?”
However, she couldn’t help but note the mixed response to her character’s queer storyline. Fans weren’t too pleased that Miranda had sex with Che before she told her husband she wanted to end their marriage, while some found it hard to grapple that someone as type-A as Miranda could have substance abuse issues.
However, Nixon told the outlet that she “really liked the fact that it was messy”.
“That’s part of it. Just because we’re queer doesn’t mean we have to be perfect too,” she said. “Miranda had these experiences a lot later in life than I did, but it wasn’t a kind of, ‘Oh, I’ve always been this thing, and I can’t believe all the time I’ve wasted before discovering this one true part of myself.'”
Her character ended season two on a cliffhanger, having travelled to Cleveland to surprise Che after ending her marriage for good. She calls Carrie from a taxi on the way to the airport and excitedly tells her, “I’m in a rom-com, Carrie!”
We’re yet to find out how that surprise visit is going to go, and honestly, it could be anyone’s guess. However, Ramírez is not returning for season three due to a scheduling conflict.
Season 3 of And Just Like That… launches on 29 May on HBO Max.
