Out MSNBC news anchor Rachel Maddow gleefully mocked Donald Trump for his latest scandal involving Serbian real estate, Jared Kushner, and a forged document.
Maddow explained to viewers that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić is essentially that country’s “version of Donald Trump” and that massive protests have swept the country in an attempt to oust him.

So why would he care?
Well, the Trump and Kushner families have been vying to build Europe’s first Trump Tower at the site of what Maddow called “the Serbian equivalent of Mt. Rushmore.” The historic landmark in Belgrade is the site of a NATO bombing that took place more than two decades ago. The wrecked building remains in the spot and serves as a national heritage site and memorial.
Donald Trump wants to tear it down and build a luxury hotel and apartments.
As Maddow said, this became “one of those times where it comes in handy that there’s no rule of law.” The Serbian president, she explained, received some sort of waiver with so-called expert opinion saying the spot was no longer a heritage site and could be demolished. This led to a new wave of citizen protests that ultimately led to the revelation that the waiver was forged, Maddow explained, praising the Serbians for their unrelenting pressure on their corrupt government.
“Amid the just unrelenting, ever-increasing, ever-broadening totally persistent, creative, totally unafraid pressure campaign from that country’s citizens, who have turned out into the street again and again and again, this whole mess is all now falling apart.”
It came out that the head of the Serbian agency protecting cultural monuments fabricated the expert opinion and is now facing criminal charges for doing so.
“Darn that rule of law!” Maddow gloated. “If it wasn’t for the remaining rule of law and for those meddling kids. Now maybe there never will be a Trump tower in Europe… Womp Womp. Sad Trombone.”
Maddow’s broader point in the segment was that no matter what, the actions of an authoritarian dictator will always run counter to the interests of a country’s people. She emphasized that the Serbian resistance movement is a good reminder for the world that “authoritarians and dictators are always, always corrupt.”
