Student ‘expelled’ over trans prom date
May 24 2025, 08:15

A high school student in Georgia has claimed she was forced to withdraw from her Christian school after attending prom with her trans friend, just weeks before graduation.

Emily Wright, a student at North Cobb Christian School near Atlanta, attended the school’s prom on 21 March.

Wright brought her trans friend, who doesn’t attend the school, as her prom date. The prom took place off of campus and her mother, Tricia, gave permission by signing a form to confirm their attendance.

According to her mum, the only restriction noted on the signed form was the guest’s age.

@pinknews A high school student in Georgia says she was forced to withdraw from her Christian school after attending prom with her transgender friend, just weeks before graduation. Emily Wright, a student at North Cobb Christian School near Atlanta, had attended the school’s off-campus prom on 21st March and her date was a friend who doesn’t attend the school. Tricia Wright, Emily’s mother, was made to sign a form allowing her to bring a guest. According to Wright, the only restriction mentioned on the prom form was the guest’s age. But ten days after the event, she was unexpectedly called into the principal’s office. Tricia says she received a call from the principal, who told her that Emily would be expelled. She told Atlanta News First that neither the school’s prom guidelines nor the student code of conduct explicitly prohibit LGBTQ+ individuals from attending events. However, ten days after the event, Emily was called into the principal’s office, with her mum claiming that she received a call from the principal informing her that her daughter would be expelled.

Emily’s parents wrote to the school’s principal and headmaster calling the decision “discriminatory”.

“The school chose to kick out a senior student just four weeks before graduation simply because Emily was being inclusive and kind,” the letter said, as reported by Atlanta News First.

PinkNews has contacted North Cobb Christian School for comment.

Last year, Corey Rae, who is believed to be the first trans prom queen, married her partner in a “magical” ceremony just one year after getting engaged.

The year prior saw hundreds of trans youth celebrate the first-ever US trans prom. The event was hastily scheduled in association with the American Civil Liberties Association (ACLU) after a Mississippi transgender student was forced to miss her graduation after being told to dress “like a boy”.
