Maine wins major court victory about trans rights against president
Maine’s governor told the president she’d see him in court. And she just won.
“Please be hereby advised that large-scale Federal Funding will be held back, maybe permanently, if the Executive Order on this subject matter is not adhered to,” Trump said, using official-sounding words.

The story surfaced on Fox News last week, when a cisgender athlete shared her account of being beaten in a long jump competition by a trans competitor.
“I just want to preface by saying I have nothing against this athlete as a person, and I have nothing against the trans community,” said high school athlete Katie McGuiness.
The teenager avoided getting drawn into America Reports host Sandra Smith’s prods to put down the trans athlete, AB Hernandez, who was heckled and mocked at the track event.
A crowd of about 30 adults, including three local school board members, spent hours at a track meet at Yorba Linda High School heckling the 16-year-old transgender athlete two weeks ago.
“There’s nothing I can do about people’s actions, just focus on my own,” Hernandez told Capital & Main. “I’m still a child, you’re an adult, and for you to act like a child shows how you are as a person.”
Hernandez, a student at Jurupa Valley High School, has been the target of a right-wing campaign to ban trans student athletes from California youth sports.
Those hecklers now include the president of the United States, who called Hernandez’s appearance at the meet “TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS” and threatened California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) – who Trump calls “Newscum” – with cutting off all federal aid to the state if she’s allowed to compete.
“The governor, himself, said it is ‘UNFAIR.’ I will speak to him today to see which way he wants to go???” Trump said in his rant.
Newsom told conservative commentator and activist Charlie Kirk in March that he thinks it’s “deeply unfair” to allow trans girls and women to compete in women’s sports.
“It is an issue of fairness. It’s deeply unfair. We’ve got to own that, we’ve got to acknowledge it,” Newsom said on Kirk’s podcast.
The governor and likely Democratic candidate for president in 2028 also noted the need for “humility and grace,” because trans people have a higher risk of suicide and mental health issues.
State Sen. Scott Wiener (D) drew a parallel between Trump’s California trans threats and those he issued to Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) earlier this year.
“He’s now targeting California just like he targeted Maine: Threatening federal funds if CA doesn’t follow his edicts targeting trans people. CA law protects trans people. That won’t change. Maine won in court. So will CA. As Maine’s Governor said, ‘See you in court.'”
