The US needs ‘less LGBTQ+ graduate majors from Harvard’, says White House press secretary
May 29 2025, 08:15

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has said to Fox News that the US needs “less LGBTQ+ graduates from Harvard” in the latest update to the Trump Administration seemingly targeting the university.

The Department of Education froze billions of dollars of funding to the Ivy League university after it defied Trump’s orders on DEI and peaceful protests, amid the administration’s decision to ban Harvard University from enrolling international students

And in an update to the ongoing situation, White House press secretary Leavitt, who once claimed that Democrats execute babies in hospital, suggested that “LGBTQ+ graduate majors” are a factor in the funding cuts.

On Monday (26 May), she told Fox News: “The president is more interested in giving that taxpayer money to trade schools and programs and state schools where they are promoting American values, but most importantly educating the next generation based on skills that we need in our economy and our society: apprenticeships, electricians, plumbers.

“We need more of those in our country, and less LGBTQ graduate majors from Harvard University. And that’s what this administration’s position is,” she said.

Harvard does not offer an undergraduate or graduate degree in “LGBTQ+” topics. The most popular undergraduate degrees that students leave with from the university are in Econometrics and Quantitative Economics, Social Sciences, Computer Science, Political Science and Government and Applied Mathematics, as per College Raptor. Furthermore, those identifying as female make up the majority of just one of those top five degrees.

Like other institutions, Harvard does offer a major and minor in Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality. Alumni of the course have gone on to “practice law for the U.S. Embassy in Accra, Ghana, the NAACP; the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals; GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders; Ms. Foundation for Women, written speeches for President Obama, authored books, taught for Teach For America, and taught at the primary, secondary and college levels”, as per the website

One could argue, those are some pretty important careers.
