Emmerdale character Robert Sugden is back in the Yorkshire Dales! The fan-favourite gay character has made a shocking return for the first time in six years.

The award-winning British soap has been praised for its LGBTQ+ representation and inclusion of important issues, including transphobia and queer joy. And making a return to the series is none other than actor Ryan Hawley, who plays Robert. 

Wednesday’s (28 May) cliffhanger saw Robert barging into his ex-husband Aaron Dingle’s (Danny Miller) wedding to his half-brother John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth), just before the pair were about to say their vows.

 “Hello Aaron,” he tells his ex-husband. “Miss me?”

Of course, Robert, who was sentenced to life in prison in 2019, is unaware that his sibling is a medic-turned-killer. 

Actor Hawley told Digital Spy about his return: “It sets up a fantastic few episodes to finish off the wedding week, which shows how the incident of Robert turning up will resolve itself. It’s a massive dilemma for Aaron, who’s found John as a new love in his life and then he’s got Robert, who used to be the love of his life, turn up!

“He’s got a massive decision to make. I guess all the weight is on Aaron’s shoulders. What’s Robert doing there, has he got ulterior motives, does he know something about John? How has he even found out that this wedding was taking place?

“There’s a lot to unpick and so much to be revealed over the next few nights. It’s a great few episodes, and I’m really excited to see them.”

The star also said to the outlet that there’s more “drama” and “conflict” where that came from, while his incarceration status still “technically” hangs in the balance. We’ll have to wait and see what’s in store for the trio.
