A Democratic governor ordered the Pride flag to be flown over his state’s legislature as Republican lawmakers try to ban the rainbow flag.
Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature introduced a bill this year to ban the Pride flag from being flown at schools and government buildings. It’s just one of several states where Republicans have tried to ban the flag from being flown during Pride Month.

“What the Republicans say is a lie,” Gov. Tony Evers said of the right’s language policing.
The state’s governor, though, sent a strong rebuke to those lawmakers by ordering the flag to fly above the Wisconsin Capitol, the building where the legislature meets. Both chambers of the Wisconsin Legislature have a Republican majority.
“We will fight and overcome all those in every capitol and in the White House who want to erase the vast and vibrant identities, stories, and communities that make America so great,” Gov. Tony Evers (D) said in a statement.
“I promised long ago that, as governor, I would always fight to protect LGBTQ Wisconsinites with every tool and every power that I have. I will never stop keeping that promise,” he added.
Republicans criticized the governor for flying the flag above the state capitol, calling it “divisive.”
The flag will fly over the state capitol for the rest of the month.
While several states considered Pride flag bans this year, only Utah and Idaho actually passed them.
