Love, joy, and resilience: LGBTQ Families Day brings out the best side of the Internet
June 04 2025, 08:15

June 2 marked the 20th annual LGBTQ Families Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the joy, love, and beauty that queer families bring to the world and to one another.

Founded in 2006 by Mombian publisher Dana Rudolph, the day has increasingly gained recognition around the country and is now sponsored by organizations like GLAAD, Family Equality, Gays With Kids, Gay Moms Clubs, and the Human Rights Campaign.

Studies say kids of two moms are thriving, but these kids already knew that.

“The past 20 years have seen tremendous positive change for LGBTQ families, as our numbers and visibility have grown, we have achieved important legal protections for our children, and increased representation in books and media,” said Dana Rudolph, founder and publisher of Mombian.

“Right now, however, much of that is at risk in the face of resurgent anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, policies, and laws. A single day won’t turn that around, but I hope that a united show of love, joy, and resilience can help renew our strength and spread understanding. I am grateful to all of the participants over the years and look forward to both old and new voices in this year’s celebration.”

Rudolph also said the day is celebrated at the start of June in part due to Pride Month, but also because it is in between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, making room for parents who do not feel the traditional days are right for their families.

As part of the celebration, folks were invited to post on social media under #LGBTQfamiliesday to show their family pride – and they delivered.

It’s #LGBTQFamiliesDay. Mine is a wonderful blended and beautiful mess, but I love them all so much! #Momsky
