Air Canada launches first flight staffed by all LGBTQ+ crew to celebrate Pride month
June 04 2025, 08:15

Air Canada has launched its first ever flight staffed by all-2SLGBTQIA+ staff in order to celebrate Pride month.

The airline, which is Canada’s largest, launched the flight on 3 June, which featured an all-2SLGBTQIA+ crew. The ‘2S‘ stands for ‘Two-Spirit‘; a term used by some Indigenous North Americans to describe Native people who fulfill a traditional third-gender social role in their communities.

A video of the voyage was posted to Air Canada’s social media, with the caption: “Our first all-2SLGBTQIA+ flight was a heartfelt celebration reflecting our unwavering commitment to inclusivity and equality, in the air and on the ground.”

In the video, airline Captain Maciej said, “It was a bit of a range of emotions coming here and getting dressed for this flight.”

Another crew member, Jean-Francois, who is a station attendant, added: “We’re living a historical moment today. I thought it was a great initiative for the whole community. It’s somewhat of a thrill being on this flight today.”

René Jr, another station attendant, said: “I’m here to support my daughter. One of my four children is part of this community. When I saw there was an opportunity to support her even more, I signed up for it right away.”

Maciej continued: “We are doing the first ever … 2SLGBTQIA+ ever in Canada. I do identify with the Progress [Pride] flag. There’s something in there that represents me as well. So there’s a bit of joy having the opportunity to do this flight today.”

Juan, the Air Canada flight’s First Officer, added: “What this means today is that this is a really special moment. It has to do with visibility, with the possibility of telling everyone that we truly feel welcome and accepted for who we are.”

The “watershed” flight in Canadian history was marked by a toast “to celebrate not just [the 2SLGBTQIA+] community, but [the] freedom to be who we are at work and in society.”

The flight kicked off with the pilot telling the passengers: “Shantay, you all stay,” in reference to RuPaul’s classic catchphrase.
