Harry Potter star Nick Frost has said the series’ creator JK Rowling is “allowed her opinion”, but that it doesn’t “align” with his own views.
In April, the Shaun of the Dead actor and disabled comments on a celebratory Instagram post about his casting as Rubeus Hagrid in HBO’s TV adaptation of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, amid backlash.
The role was originally played by the late Robbie Coltrane, who died in 2022.
The Harry Potter series will be executively produced by Rowling, who is known for her gender-critical views on the transgender community – something which landed Frost, who is known for Hot Fozz and The World’s End, in hot water with many fans.

Now, the star has confirmed that his views do not “align” with the author’s.
In an interview with The Observer, Frost spoke about Rowling, saying: “She’s allowed her opinion and I’m allowed mine, they just don’t align in any way, shape or form.”
Asked if thinks the the discourse could detract from the series, he added: “I don’t know. But maybe it shouldn’t blow over? We shouldn’t just hope it will go away, because it makes it easier. Maybe we should educate ourselves.”

Frost’s support of the trans community doesn’t come as a surprise. One of his next big projects is reportedly starring alongside trans comic Jordan Gray in her trans-focused ITV supermarket sitcom, Transaction.
HBO has previously stated that Rowling has “a right to express her views” and said that her involvement in the upcoming series hasn’t impacted casting for the lead roles.
The series is expected to air in late 2026, with each of Rowling’s seven novels in the story being turned into its own season. It’s expected to air from start to end for roughly ten years.
