Pride Month is here, and fans have rallied around baseball player Willi Castro, who appeared to show his support for the trans community by wearing the Trans Pride colours on the ball field.

Major League Baseball (MLB) player Castro was spotted wearing trans Pride colours during a game, sparking speculation of the star’s support of the transgender community. 

The MLB “utility man”, who plays for the Minnesota Twins, was seen at a game on Friday (6 June) sporting a personalised eye black (used in sports to minimise glare and improve visual contrast for players. Appearing to replicate the Trans Pride Flag with the eye black, Castro and his team played against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Donning two light blue stripes with a pink stripe in the middle under his eye, Castro was inserted as a ninth inning defensive replacement in right field during the game, which took place during the first week of Pride Month. The game also took place just one day before the team held their Pride Day celebrations.

The gesture sparked speculation among fans, with many interpreting it as a show of support for the transgender community during Pride Month, especially in light of ongoing national debates around trans inclusion in sport.

“Willi Castro said protect the dolls,” wrote one fan on Twitter. “He’s actually awesome for this, baseball is for everyone.”

“Some men aren’t threatened,” noted another on Threads. “Much respect. He’s a great man,” said a third.

“A true patriot and hero,” commented a fourth fan. 

Earlier in the week, another fan noticed that the player also appeared to sport a rainbow necklace during Pride Month this year. “The case for Willi Castro, ally grows stronger,” the fan wrote on Bluesky.
