Marjorie Taylor Greene complains that congress never condemns hate crimes against white Christians

Staunch Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene is begging the US government to think of the plight of white Christians.

Greene made her opinion known during debates on two resolutions condemning antisemitism on Monday (10 June), following the attack on demonstrators in Boulder, Colorado, who were calling for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

Mohammed Sabry Soliman, a 45-year-old Egyptian national, has been charged with a federal hate crime, attempted murder, assault and possession of an incendiary device, after he allegedly threw incendiary devices towards the crowd. At least 12 people were said to have been treated for injuries.

The resolutions passed almost unanimously. The first, brought by representative Gabe Evans, formally condemned the Colorado attack. The second, from fellow Republican David Kustoff, denounced all forms of antisemitism and deemed anti-Zionism a form of that.

Greene, one of only two to vote against the resolutions, wrote on X/Twitter that while she condemned the attack, the motions ignored acts of hate – including, according to her, abortions – aimed at white people.

“Antisemitic hate crimes are wrong but so are all hate crimes, yet congress never votes on hate crimes committed against white people: Christians, men, the homeless, or countless others,” she said.

“Americans from every background are being murdered, even in the womb, and congress stays silent. We don’t vote on endless resolutions defending them.”

She went on to claim that the resolutions prioritised “one group of Americans” over another, which was “fuelling resentment and actually driving more division, including antisemitism”.

Equalities legislation in the US does not define specific groups in its list of protected characteristics, instead using categories such as “race, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity”.

Greene has been accused of antisemitism in the past, having said in 2018 that a California wildfire was started by the Rothschilds, a wealthy Jewish family, using space lasers.

Democrat Rashida Tlaib was the only other representative to vote against the resolutions, saying they were a “Republican-led [attempt to] cynically politicise tragic acts of violence, like the recent horrific attack in Boulder”.

She accused colleagues of voting for resolutions that “demonise immigrant communities, praise ICE and pave the path for the further repression of our constitutional rights to free speech and protest in support of Palestinian lives and human rights.”
