It’s been a year and a half since queer pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death was cancelled, and we’re still not over it

Like any short-lived series with a cult following, the Max show has lived on in its fandom since it was given the axe. This weekend, Our Flag Means Death stans will be able to continue celebrating the show when an upcoming fan convention, ‘The New Uni-Con’, heads to the UK.

The New Uni-Con will be kicking off at Hilton London Gatwick, and online for fans further afield, from 20-22 June. It will also welcome a number of very exciting special guests, including the creator, producer and ‘pirate daddy’ himself, David Jenkins.

Joining him are cast members Con O’Neill, Ruibo Qian, David Fane and Nathan Foad, who play Izzy Hands, Zheng Li Sao, Fang and Lucius Spriggs respectively. The show’s costume designer Gypsy Taylor will also be attending via video link.

‬‭Tickets are available for both the in-person event in Gatwick and online streaming, giving‬ fans who can’t physically attend a chance to watch live-streamed panels and‬ interact by asking questions online.‬

Fans that haven’t yet purchased their passes can use our exclusive reader discount code, ‘PINKNEWS’, at checkout to get 15% off in-person and virtual tickets.

Alongside panels, The New Uni-Con will also offer photo ops, meet and greets and coffee breaks with the cast and crew.

Our Flag Means Death stars Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi as real-life pirates/fictional lovers Stede Bonnet and Edward ‘Blackbeard’ Teach as they fall in love and embark on adventures with the ragtag crew of the Revenge. The show attracted a large LGBTQ+ following thanks to its positive queer representation.

‭The convention’s organiser, Amy Hawkins, says: “We’re so lucky as a fandom to have such a strong community. It’s one that includes so many actors and creatives who are still so enthusiastic about what the show meant to them, and its fans.

“This is the sort of show, and community, I wish I’d had when I was growing up queer and it is so important to me to bring this community together and to be accessible to all, which is why an online attendance option was a must-have.”

Alongside being unable to let things go, the Our Flag Means Death fandom has become known for its charity efforts since the show’s cancellation. Earlier this year, fans came together to raise more than $85,000 (£66,300) to help queer youngsters in need.

A craft fair created by a couple of fans to raise money for the Campaign for Southern Equality’s Trans Youth Emergency Project set an initial goal of $5,000 (£3,900) – which was reached within 11 minutes. The campaign attracted donors from across the world.

The New Uni-Con will run from 20-22 June 2025 at Hilton London Gatwick and online. You can purchase tickets at www.siren-events.co.uk‬.
