LA hospital ‘halting trans healthcare’ amid pressure from Trump administration

An LA hospital providing care for more than 3,000 trans youth and adults is reportedly ceasing gender-affirming care after mounting pressure from the Trump administration.

The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA) said it would be shuttering its trans healthcare program after finding “no viable alternative” that would allow the hospital to continue providing specialised care.

The Center for Transyouth Health and Development, which provides care for trans people aged 25 and below, reportedly began telling its thousands of patients that it would begin closing its doors by 22 July.

“There is no doubt that this is a painful and significant change to our organisation and a challenge to CHLA’s mission, vision, and values,” hospital executives told staff in a leaked email shared by MadyCast News.

The email cited significant “legal and financial risks” stemming from the “shifting policy landscape at both the state and federal levels,” including a budget crisis in California and US president Donald Trump’s executive orders attacking trans healthcare.

The hospital said it had chosen 22 July as a “sunset date” after “a lengthy and through assessment of the increasingly severe impacts of federal administrative actions and proposed policies.”

Its main goal, executives said, is to “help give patient families adequate time to plan for moving care to providers less impacted by the legal and financial pressures our health system faces.”

Its decision comes following warning from the Department of Justice, Health and Human Services (HHS) and several federal public bodies that doctors and institutions continuing to provide forms of trans healthcare for under-18s would face “dire consequences.”

In its memo, executives said the threats against its staff were “no longer theoretical,” adding: “Taken together, the Attorney General memo, HHS review, and the recent solicitation of tips from the FBI to report hospitals and providers of [gender-affirming care] strongly signal this Administration’s intent to take swift and decisive action, both criminal and civil, against any entity it views as being in violation of the executive order.”

LA Times heard from Maxine, the mother of a patient that had been using CHLA’s trans healthcare program, who said they were “disappointed and scared and enraged.”

“The challenge is how we break news to this kid who has had such a positive experience with everybody at [CHLA],” she added.

Mabe Pudlow, a trans campaigner, also told the publication: “CHLA needs to be a leader in this and stand up to the Trump administration, because other hospitals are taking note of what they’re doing.”
