London’s ‘oldest LGBTQ+ venue’ reopens after major investment

London’s “oldest LGBTQ+ venue” has reopened following a six-figure investment.

The City of Quebec – an Art Deco pub in the heart of Marylebone – reopened to the public on 26 June.

The pub, which is owned by pub company and brewer Greene King, has been a hub for the LGBTQ+ community since its establishment in 1946, when it was originally frequented by RAF pilots.

Following its major investment the space has seen its interiors upgraded, with the ground floor offering a stage, complete with projector screen, effects lighting and a new DJ booth – perfect for the return of the pub’s weekly live music and cabaret event.

The venue’s basement has been adorned with art that evokes the pub’s history, while upgrades to the layout lighting and toilets ensure it’s a space people won’t want to leave.

Its investment is part of Greene King’s commitment to champion diversity and inclusivity by providing safe spaces for everyone to enjoy.

‘We’re thrilled to showcase a new and improved look’

Darren Dunn, general manager at the City of Quebec, said: “Pubs are the hubs of local communities, and they play a central role in providing safe and welcoming spaces for people of all backgrounds. The City of Quebec has long been established as a vibrant hotspot for the LGBTQIA+ community in the heart of London, and we’re thrilled to showcase a new and improved look from 26 June.

“As one of Greene King’s Heritage pubs, The City of Quebec’s investment looks to honour the pub’s rich history, whilst bringing a modern twist to the pub’s original Art Deco design. We are celebrating the pub’s relaunch in style with a wide range of exciting promotions and events throughout the summer, kicking off with cabaret hosted by Dolly Diamond and karaoke with Tania LeCoq on our opening day. We look forward to welcoming guests back very soon to enjoy all we have to offer.”

Last month, a new Black-owned LGBTQ+ venue called Coven opened in Hackney Wick.

Coven and The City of Quebec’s opening comes amid a gradual decline in queer venues in the capital . However, LGBTQ+ spaces are now beginning to return. Last year, lesbian bar La Camionera officially opened its doors as a permanent venue in Hackney, while Camden’s famous Black Cap is also set to reopen.
