Anti-LGBTQ+ Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) wrote a letter formally urging the Trump administration to commute George Santos’ prison sentence. The disgraced former congressmember is currently serving an over seven-year sentence in federal prison after he pled guilty to counts of wire fraud and identity theft in connection with various schemes to enrich himself at the expense of campaign donors.

“I am writing to request that your office urge the President to commute the sentence of former Congressman George Santos,” Greene wrote in the letter to the Office of the Pardon Attorney. She wrote that she agrees that Santos broke the law but argued that Santos’ sentence is too long, adding that she appreciated his political work in the House.

Then Greene brought up Santos’ supposed regret that he allegedly expressed in a religious context.

“Furthermore, my office has spoken with a pastor of his who discussed the regret and remorse of Mr. Santos, agreeing that the sentence imposed is a grave injustice,” she wrote, adding that she knows of people in Congress who have done “far worse” than Santos and “yet have faced zero criminal charges.” She did not name these people in her letter or in her accompanying social media post.
