A right-wing comedian delivered an abhorrent speech attacking trans people in the Texas Senate, saying – amongst other vile things – that trans people should be used as “suicide bombers” by the US military.
Alex Stein – a comedian and YouTuber who hosts the web show Prime Time with Alex Stein – delivered the speech before the Senate Committee on State Affairs on Monday (4 August) in support of Senate Bill 7, a bathroom bill that would ban trans people from using single-sex facilities in government and school buildings, prisons and women’s violence shelters that match their gender.
The details of the bill set out a $5,000 first-time fine for government agencies or educational establishments where a violation occurs. This increases to a $25,000 fine for subsequent violations.
According to the Texas Tribune, more than 400 people registered to testify in person or through writing on the bill, with the majority being against it. Within those numbers, it was estimated more than 100 individuals gave in-person testimony to lawmakers, which at times became deeply emotional.
Addressing lawmakers, Stein started off by making a homophobic sports joke by saying he is not anti-LGBTQ+. because he is a Dallas Cowboys fan and therefore has “a lot of gay pride“.
He went on to call trans women “gargoyles in a dress”, “mentally ill” and “perverts”, pushing the conservative untruth that trans people use the toilet that matches their gender to get sexual satisfaction “from going there and looking under a stall”.

During his speech, Stein discussed trans people in the US military – who were banned by president Donald Trump following his return to the White House in January – and reiterated the baseless conspiracy theory that trans people are responsible for the majority of mass shootings in the United States.
“I actually like transgenders in the military because, first of all, transgenders are some of the meanest people on planet Earth, so they make a good soldier, don’t you think?” Stein said.
“And then second of all, transgenders love to do mass shootings. So you know, that’s perfect for a military veteran.
“And then on top of that, the suicide rate is incredibly high among transgender people, so we could just use them. Like, the Taliban has suicide bombers. Maybe you guys can actually, you know, if you commit suicide, actually help us in the battlefield. So that would be good.”
Many notable conservative figures in recent months and years including Elon Musk, Libs of TikTok, Riley Gaines and Trump Jr have pushed the idea that trans people in the US – who make up only 0.6 per cent of the US population – commit violent crime at a higher rate than the general population, a conservative conspiracy theory which has frequently been disproven.
According to The Violence Project database of mass shootings, which uses data from the more than 190 mass shootings reported since 1966, cisgender men make up 97 per cent of mass public shooters.
In March 2023 analysis of such figures by Washington Post fact checker Glenn Kessler outlined that “with 0.6 per cent of the population, transgender people would expect to be involved in about one shooting”.
Alongside this, the set of criteria defined by the Gun Violence Archive – which counts a mass shooting if it involves a minimum of four victims shot, either injured or killed, not including any shooter – states trans people “would be expected to have committed at least 16 mass shootings since 2018”.
“Instead there are just three possible cases cited by conservatives,” Kessler concluded.
By contrast to Stein’s offensive tirade, numerous individuals used their time before lawmakers to candidly lay out how the bill would impact their day-to-day lives.
“I won’t just lose access to a restroom. I’ll lose access to the future in the state I worked so hard to build,” said the vice president of the Texas Transgender Nondiscrimination Scholars, Autumn Lauener. “I’ll be forced to use the men’s restroom in workplaces that perceive me as a threat, risking harassment or worse.”
Following the committee hearing, lawmakers passed the bill in a 18-2 vote in the upper chamber.
