LGBTQ+ pop icon Boy George has called out JK Rowling’s recent comments about former child actor, Emma Watson.

The Karma Chameleon singer branded the Harry Potter author a “wood snake” in an online post while defending Emma Watson’s continued support of the trans community.

In September, Emma Watson, who played Hermoine Granger in the Harry Potter film series, made an increasingly rare public appearance on the podcast On Purpose With Jay Shetty to address the rift between JK Rowling and the film franchise’s main trio.

She told the podcaster and motivational speaker that she still holds “love” for the author and was open to having a “dialogue,” which she said was “never made possible.”

“I just don’t think these things are either or,” she said on her relationship with Rowling. “I think it’s my deepest wish that I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with.”

Responding to Watson’s comments, Rowling posted a lengthy statement on X/Twitter accusing her of living a “life (cushioned) by wealth and fame.”

The billionaire, who, according to the Sunday Times Rich List, has a net worth of $1.2 billion, claimed the former child actor has “so little experience of real life she’s ignorant of how ignorant she is.”

“She’s never going to be placed on a mixed-sex public hospital ward. I’d be astounded if she’s been in a high street changing room since childhood.”

Addressing her claims, Boy George wrote on X/Twitter: “Who cares what JK Boring thinks about anything. She is the dullest of the dull.

“My real life pisses on her fiction. I stand with Emma Watson. She is a ‘fire horse’. Rowling is a ‘wood snake’.”

JK Rowling says she will never ‘forgive’ Harry Potter stars

Rowling first courted controversy for her views in 2019 when she wrote on social media in support of Maya Forstater, who was engaged in a legal battle with a former employer over her “gender-critical” views.

Six months later, Rowling posted a series of tweets criticising inclusive language used in an article about period care for “people who menstruate”.

In June 2020, she published a lengthy post on her website, sharing it on Twitter with the caption “TERF wars”. In it, she explained that one of her reasons for speaking out was that she believed the “new trans activism” would have a significant on her charitable work aimed at alleviating social deprivation in Scotland

In 2024, the 60-year-old suggested she would never “forgive” Watson, as well as co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, for publicly disagreeing with her trans views.

In April, she misattributed statistics from the Coventry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre, which reports that 98 per cent of sexual assault arrests in the UK involved men, to suggest trans women are a threat to cisgender women. However, the statistic does not mention trans people whatsoever.

In another April tweet, when challenged over her claims that excluding trans women would make female spaces safer, she compared trans women entering bathrooms to sexual predation, writing: “Creeps, voyeurs, paedophiles and rapists don’t campaign to make their predation more difficult. They tend to argue exactly what you’re arguing, ‘there’s no risk, stop pearl-clutching, don’t be a b**ch, let me in.’”

In a June episode of Lorraine, Boy George heavily criticised Rowling’s “disappointing” rhetoric, calling her a “muggle” on trans issues.

He said it was “ridiculous” to suggest that children are coerced into identifying as trans, adding that it’s usually the “children that inform the parents.”
