President Donald Trump made hateful comments about transgender people during his Tuesday Oval Office meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Carney — whose child Sasha Carney, is nonbinary — sat silently on video during Trump’s comments; and it’s not the first time Trump has made transphobic statements during his visits with foreign leaders.
“We have no men in women’s sports. We’re not going to take your child away and change the sex of your child. We’re not going to do things like that,” Trump said as Mark Carney looked down with his hands folded on his knee. Trump then claimed that Democrats harmed the nation with “woke crap,” adding, “and now it has stopped.”

The meeting was ostensibly to discuss U.S.-Canadian relations following Trump’s threats to annex Canada as the “51st state,” his imposition of 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum Canadian imports, and the looming re-negotiation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement trade deal.
While Trump called Carney a “world-class leader” and a tough negotiator, social media users criticized Carney’s silence as Trump essentially mocked his child.
